about

This was maybe the third song we put together for this record but it’s probably my favorite of the bunch. I feel like it has a little bit of everything we did throughout the rest of the record distilled down to one song. If I remember correctly, I think the actual song - the melody, chords, and progressions were written on piano in a much slower ballad style while I was writing the lyrics, and it was eventually flipped to what you hear now once it was essentially finished and I was wondering how best to do it in a full band context. A big influence or inspiration for the rhythms was early Arctic Monkeys - their second record, Favourite Worst Nightmare, in particular. That tight syncopated rhythmic style was the seed of the main riff and it just went from there. One thing I really like about this song is that no section ever repeats exactly. Every verse, chorus, etc. has at least a slight variation which isn’t always the case. But we do try to throw lots of twists into our arrangements to keep parts from getting stale or repetitive.

lyrics

I’m biding my time
One step ahead of everything I’ve tried
Circling round the outskirts of my mind
Surfacing at all of the worst times

Just enough to keep me guessing
Tell me there’s something left to burn

Don’t read too far into it
You can’t drag me back into this
You never did know when to quit, did you?

I’m biting my tongue
All along your song still fills my lungs
It’s useless to pursue that setting sun
So foolish to assume you’re letting up

Just enough to keep me guessing
Tell me there’s something left to burn

Don’t read too far into it
You can’t drag me back into this
You never did know when to quit, did you?

But I understand I must admit
I’ve spent long nights wondering if
You might be considering it too
